Modifying the properties of materials for practical applications

With its structure of metal and plastics engineering, the Institute of Materials Engineering at the University of Kassel comprises five departments:

  • Plastics Engineering
  • Metallic Materials
  • Mechanical Behavior of Materials
  • Granularity of Structural Information in Materials Engineering
  • Extreme Light for Nanostructures

In the ‘Extreme Light for Nanostructures’ research group, ultrashort laser pulses are used to modify the properties of materials for practical applications. In doing so, the research group works in close collaboration with the Institute’s specialist disciplines and utilizes the extensive range of analytical methods available at the Institute of Materials Science, as well as those from the ‘Femtosecond Spectroscopy and Ultra-fast Laser Control’ research area within Experimental Physics with its femtosecond laser system and established materials processing platform.
