Wörner Schäfer Rückert

Concentrated Expertise

In the mid 1990ies, the triumvirate of Wetzlar’s oldest law firms merged under the name Wörner Schäfer Rückert. Today, an expert team of approximately two dozen specialists attend to clients with a wide variety of legal issues.

The imposing building of the law firm Wörner Schäfer Rückert is shaped like a mirrored L. With a bit of imagination, you can see the Latin word Lex. The law is at home here – uniting all aspects of it under one roof.

Vast spectrum of legal consultation

The romantic notion that the lawyers and notaries of Wörner Schäfer Rückert spend all day here in the Wertherstraße poring over law books and scribbling pads dates back to the time when Germany’s arguably most famous poet, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, worked as a trainee at the Imperial High Court in Wetzlar. Today, legal advice is comprehensive and varied, reflecting the complexity of modern jurisdiction. More than twenty associates, seven of them specialized in a particular area of law, cover a vast spectrum of legal issues from A to Z. These are just some of the main areas in alphabetic order: building law, civil law, commercial agency law, corporate law, criminal law, employment law, family or inheritance law, and insolvency law.

Naturally, neither private individuals nor entrepreneurs want to fall foul of the law. So it’s all the more important to make sure it doesn’t come to that, explains one of the firm’s lawyers, Rüdiger Brenk. “Our consultation work has increased substantially over the last few years, because wise and foresighted advice, particularly where legal issues are concerned, frequently costs less than a later dispute.” If it does come to that, it is a matter of course for him to provide comprehensive information on litigation risks, taking both legal and commercial aspects into account and including the possibility of an out-of-court settlement. His areas of legal specialism are employment law, building law, business law and commercial agency law, “whereas business law is a blanket term for the civil law applicable to companies and businesses,” says Brenk.

Ownership succession and compliance issues

In any case, the lawyers and notaries of Wörner Schäfer Rückert provide comprehensive advice on all legal aspects of their clients’ business and represent them in court. Having a wide client base in the Wetzlar region, some companies have put their trust in the law firm for decades now, and for all sorts of reasons: “A lot of family-run businesses come to us to regulate issues of inheritance law and company succession,” explains lawyer and notary Benjamin Schäfer, himself already a third-generation employee of his grandfather’s law firm. Here too it is important to take the right steps as soon as possible to prepare for ownership succession in a sustainable way.

An aspect of corporate law that has recently become increasingly significant is the issue of compliance, and not only in international corporations but also in small and medium-sized enterprises. “Nowadays, compliance with guidelines and the active avoidance of infringements along the entire value-added chain is not only expected, but demanded, of all companies,” says Benjamin Schäfer. “For suppliers to fulfill their customers’ compliance specifications they have to have appropriate legal counselling and need a local partner in the event of an emergency.”

Wörner Schäfer Rückert covers all these areas of expertise and is always up to date with all the latest legislation. “We can’t afford to stand still any more than the other companies in the region,” stresses lawyer and notary Dr. Axel Sollmann. “And this is all the more important when we have to enforce public law as well as private law. Medium-sized companies sometimes find it particularly hard to keep abreast of the latest developments in this respect. We have the experts to deal with such cases. In every area of specialism – and under one roof.”
